I just checked the New York Times and was informed, as a piece of breaking news, that J.D. Salinger has died at 91. Salinger was born and raised in Manhattan, he did stints at NYU (Go bobcats!) and Columbia, with a trip to Vienna to learn the meat importing trade in between. He went on to write The Catcher in the Rye, Nine Stories, Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction, and Franny and Zooey. The last three are three of my personal favorites. Maybe I'll go read one of his short stories now, to honor his life.
